I know it has been a long time to write my blog...
Anyway, I'd like to write about my favorite teacher.
One of my favorite teachers is a history teacher called "Mr. Iwasawa."
He was my teacher whose subject was world history, and he was one of the most famous teacher in my high school.
The characteristic of his lecture was that he had never used any textbook during class.
Every time he did lectures, he taught students world history as a kind of long tale without any textbook. Therefore, his lectures always gave us real histories not like contents in a textbook.
He always had his notebooks made by himself for the lectures, it means that he always did his best to prepare to give us the best lectures. I was really impressed by his attitude toward the lectures and I became to love world history the best.
I still appreciate him with his great lectures because he taught me how to learn history and the fact that history is not just a content of a textbook but the actual events and it has still continuing everyday.
I like all teachers in my high school but that's a reason why I think he is one of the most favorite teachers I've ever met in my life.

Hi hideki -
ReplyDeletegreat to see you posting again. Your history teacher sounds amazing he mustve been really committed and hard-working to do all that extra work and to help bring the subject alive for you. As you say, it's important to understand that History isn't just things that happened in the past, but still has an impact on people's feelings today - as Chen Chen's rather aggressive (and repetitive!) questions above prove!! Of course, it's good to know these things happened and good to have some understanding of why - though it's hard to explain these things completely as there were all kinds of events and ideolgies that contributed to them. It's also good NOT to hold people today responsible fir the actions of past generations .... and to recognise that every single country has blood on it's hands and has aspects of its history it doesn't feel good discussing: china and Taiwan (and England!!) included. Anyway, thanks again for writing great stuff.
To chen chen.
ReplyDeletethank you for your lots comments. To be honest, i was really surprised with your reaction towards my writing.
I want to answer your questions but actually my teacher taught us history mainly from 1600~1900 years. So, he did not tell about world war 2 at all.
In addition, I am sorry I am not good at modern history so I will study someday.
Anyway, thank you for your comments again.
Hi again Hideki -
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your very calm and measured response above.
It's important, I think, to know about things like the Rape of Nanking and Japan's colonial ambitions in Asia as these events still have an influence on the way Japan and Japanese people are perceived by other Asians.
What happened in the 18th and 19th century in Europe was vast expansion and colonization of foreign territories, usually done in combination with a belief in racial superiority and in the inferiority of the peoples who were being conquered. England and Spain and France were the first countries to really expand and get rich as a result and countries like Japan saw what was happening in Europe and created their own version - State Shinto. This belief emphasised the special, unique quality of Japan and Japan's superiority, and as a result, some horrific things were done by Japanese troops as they tried to conquer Asia - especially in Manchuria.
However, the really sad irony is that these ideas still exist today. In many ways, what China has done since World War II - with its expansion into Tibet and so on - can be seen as a continuation of the same ideas: development through expansion and the belief in the superiority of one group of people over another.
A depressing endless cycle!
