My best teacher

Hi, everyone. I'm Shinya.

I’d like to write about one of good teachers from secondary school.
He is an English teacher called Mr.Suga. He had a great influence on my life.

Firstly, Thanks to him, I made up my mind to study abroad.
Before I met him, I had disliked English and had poor marks for English. I thought in that time, why bother to study English when I was in Japan?
His teaching was not special and not especially different from other teachers. However, he made us think why we study English. He often said “Why are you studying English? The answer depends on people. Some people say we study it to pass the entrance examination, other people say it is useful for my job in the future. These are not wrong. But I want us to remember English is one of tools to communicate with other people.”
His word made me think about it seriously. Moreover, he went abroad to study when he was at university. He often told us his experience of study abroad. And when I asked some questions about English, he gave me a careful and detailed explanation. That’s why I grew to like it and I decided to go here to improve my English skill and communicate with lots of other countries’ people.

Secondly, he is also my club teacher. When I was president of music club, he supported me. He taught me not only English but also what I should do as president. In addition, he also loved classical music and he was well informed about it. We often talked about it and sometimes go to the concert with my club’s member. I really enjoyed it.

Therefore, I respect him. He is my best teacher on my life. I learned lots of things by him. If I hadn’t met him, I probably wouldn’t be here.

Thanks.
Shinya

  2. Hi Shinya -
Thanks for taking the time to write this.

I'm sure if Mr. Suga could see your English now, he'd be proud of you, because this was a really well written piece. I was particularly impressed by the fact that you used mixed conditionals like "If I hadn’t met him, I probably wouldn’t be here." Wow!

He sounds like a great teacher, anyway, and I agree with his focus on languages as being first and foremost about communication, and particularly about communicating with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

Hope you feel you're getting plenty of opportunity to practise here in London - and to put everything you've leared already to good use.

    Best,
    Hugh
