3-4 Rupert Court

Possibly my favourite place to eat in the whole of London is a tiny little Malaysian restaurant called C&R Cafe. It’s located at 3-4 Rupert Court, which is a little alleyway between Wardour Street and Rupert Street – one minute from ChinaTown. C&R doesn’t look like anything special from the outside – there’s no fancy decoration, nothing like that – and it’s certainly not expensive (I don’t think it’s ever cost more than ten pounds a head whenever I’ve been there!). No, what makes it special is quite simply the food. It’s really good, home-cooked Malaysian street food, served quickly and simply and always really really delicious. It reminds me of the little family-run places I used to eat in a lot when I lived in Indonesia.
I don’t know if you’re familiar with Malaysian cuisine at all (it’s very similar to Indonesian), but – just like the country itself – it’s a multi-cultural mix of Chinese, Tamil / Sri Lankan and local food. The basic staples are rice or noodles and then you get chicken or beef or seafood, often cooked quite spicy. Of course, because a lot of Malaysians are Muslim, lots of the dishes are halal – pork-free – too.
The dishes I’d recommend are the laksa – a big bowl of spicy noodle soup with prawns and beansprouts and bits of chicken that’s always really good here – and the nasi lemak, which is rice cooked in coconut milk and served with spicy sambal sauce, chicken, tiny fried fish, peanuts and so on. If you’re really hungry, I’d go for the roti canai as a starter – this is a round flat bread that you dip in spicy sauce: really, really good.
I hope some of you try this place and enjoy it.
