I'm Rei.
First, I'm afraid, I forgot to introduce my self in last blog.
I'm a student at master course, and I study about Logistics in Japan.
It's an interesting subject, I think.
At the same time, I like learning foreign languages such as English, French...
Then, I decided to study abroad.
I hope to enjoy studying English in London!

Next, I would like you to know my favourite shop, Whole Foods Market.

I found it last year in NY, USA. It was when I stayed in NY for 2 weeks.
This is a kind of supermarket, and popular as the shop sells organic foods.
I went there with my friends last Monday.
We enjoyed shopping, and I got the granola tastes good!
I recommend you to buy a lot of delicious food!

Using the online workbook

Hi everyone -
I thought I'd make a video to show you all how to use the online workbook.

The first thing to do is go to www.myelt.heinle.com

Then follow the steps in this video.

Click on this to watch the video online

You'll need to be patient as it can slow to load and run.
It should help though.

If you still have problems and can't access the online workbook, contact me and I'll help you out.

It'd be really good if you could all start doing half an our or forty-five minutes a day from the online workbook, to help you remember everything we've done in class.

Start with Unit 1 and do all the exercises there.
Then move on to Unit 2 - and so on.

Recycled condoms

In class today, David and Teresa and Natalya were talking about a story they'd heard about recycled condoms being used to make other things in China.

I wasn't sure if this story was true or not, but I've Googled it and found it is - and there have been lots of protests in China after the story was revealed!

You can read more about it here:

Outrage over use of recycled condoms - China Daily

And here's another version of the same story.

Here's a story about Nike treating Indonesian workers really badly.

Oh, and here's a really short video to give you some idea of what it was like when Primark opened in Oxford Street.

My favourite shop

This week, I'd like you to write about a shop you really love.

Tell everyone where this shop is, what kind of shop it is, why you love it so much, what kind of things you usually buy there, how often you go and so on.

If you can include a picture, that'd be great.
Maybe you can find one online?

Here's a shop I really love.

It's a really great old book shop called Foyle's. It's located on Charing Cross Road - between 113 and 119 - and the nearest tube station is Tottenham Court Road. It's walking distance from the university and I often go there to browse and see what they have in.

The shop opened in 1903, so it's over 100 years old. They're one of the last big independent bookshops left in London. Most other bookshops are big chains like Borders and Waterstone's, but I've always preferred independent stores myself. They're more personal, less commercial. Foyle's has a really wide selection of books and you can find things there that you can't find anywhere else except online. It's also always nice to see so many of my own books there, of course - in the English as a Foreign language section.

One other thing I really love about Foyle's is that on the first floor, there's a cafe and record / music shop called Ray's jazz that's part of the store now. They do good, strong coffee and sell (and play) great music. I spend a lot of time there just meeting friends or looking through their selection of music.

If you like books and reading, you really should go and have a look round the shop.
It's amazing and I really recommend it!

Look forward to reading about shops you love.

Me and My sister

Hi everyone .

I'm Shinya Nakamura. Please call me Shinya!

First, I want to tell you about myself.

I'm from Japan and I lived in Yokohama in Japan.

I am a student in the second year at the University and mainly study economis and aommercial science.

I belong to a string orchestra club and play the viola in my club. At first, I have played the violin for 12 years on and off. When I entered the university, I change the music instrument and started to play the viola. This picture was taken in the regular concert. We played Tchaikovsky : Serenade for strings.
I really like listening to classical music, much as playing it, so I'd like to go to the concert in London.

My hobbies are reading, playing tennis, cooking, especially making a cake.

I sometimes bake a cake on weekend in Japan.

Next, I'd like to introduce you my older sister. Right person is her boyfriend in this picture. They are engaged and are going toget married next year. This picture was taken after the piano concert this July.
She play the piano very well. She started to play the piano at the age of 4 and went to school of music. Now, she is a research assistant at Tokyo University of the Arts.

She is very creative and open and clever. I get on well with her. We often go shopping on weekend and sometimes play the music instruments together.

I would like to introduce my friends next time.

I hope I can see a lot of pictures and know everyone well on this blog.

Thank you.

Hello, every one.My name is Kenzo. I'm 22 years old and was born in Japan. I'm glad to participate in my class with every one. And this is the first time to write a blog. I'm at a loss what to write it.So, I'll write about London life.

About a week have passed after I arrived in London. I felt that it is so different to live in Japan: culture, atmosphere, smoking area, and so on. I am so shy that it might take a lot of time to get used to them. But, the life is so exciting. I had many experience within a week. I went to a plenty of sightseeing, made friend with foreign person. Most different things in culture I felt is foreign people have a religion. Most Japanese don't have a religion. For the sake of it, it is so difficult for me to understand a religion. If I have anything that I don't know, please teach me. Let's have a good time.

Of the end, he is my friends.

It's a joke. His name is noel gallagher. He is UK musician and respectful person for me. He will release his new album next month.

Thank you!

Hi everyone. This Hideki Takase, please just call me Hide.

Let's begin talking about myself.
I'm from Japan and am 20years old.
When I was in Japan, I was a university student and had studied Economics.
For me, studying Economics was really exciting so I belonged to a club which holds study sessions by student themselves. It was extremely fun for me to attend such a session because there were a lot of hardworking students and we had tried to improve by learning from others.

I have two hobbies, watching movies and taking photo. Sad to say, I haven't watched any movies since I came to London as I have been busy in order to become accustomed to life in London. But, I am really happy to be able to take lots beautiful photo like Hyde Park, Green Park, and towns of course.

Next, I'd like to introduce my family, but unfortunately I don't have any picture of my family so I 'd like to introduce one of my friends.

This is one of my friends, Tsubasa. This photo was taken this August. I have been known each other for more than 2 years. We are in the same university and also in same seminar. Lot's of my friends study abroad, so Tsubasa also will study abroad in Glasgow University in Scotland. He likes playing and watching football so he really looking forward going Scotland to see football games directly.
The one word which can describe him is "neat". He is crazy to clean his room. Every time I went to his room, I was always surprised what a clean room it was.

Well, I think it's enough to show myself and one of my friends.
I hope we can know each other well with this blog as soon as possible.
Thank you.

A good friend of mine

As well as writing and telling everyone about yourself - who you are, where you're from, what you do, what you like doing in your free time, your family and so on - it'd be great if you could also tell us a bit about a good friend of yours.

Here's a picture of one of my oldest friends called Dan. He's the one on the left in this photo.

We've known each other since we were 15 or 16, so for almost thirty years now! We grew up in different parts of the country, but we met through our shared love of music - Dan used to design posters for bands and I played in a band and wrote for music magazines and that's really how we met. We used to share a house together in south-east London and even though Dan's now living in Berlin with his wife, we're still very close and Skype or email or text all the time.

Dan's very creative. He now designs and thinks up the covers for CDs. Here's some of the work he's done.

Sometimes I see his work on big posters round London and it always makes me feel very proud and happy for him.

Anyway, tell us about someone you're close to - how do you know each other, how long have you been friends, what do they do, what're they like, and so on.

Hugh

Monday, 12 September 2011

Hello - and welcome!

Hi everyone.
Welcome to London, welcome to the University of Westminster and welcome to your class blog. Because it's the beginning of the course, I wanted to tell you a bit about myself, so that you can get to know me better.

My name's Hugh, as you already know, and I'm 42. I've been teaching since 1992, so for almost twenty years now. I started working at Westminster in 1996, so this is my fifteenth year. I still really love teaching and feel lucky to have a job I enjoy so much.

I live in North London - in an area called Harringay. My nearest tube stations are Manor House and Turnpike Lane, on the Piccadilly Line. I'm married and have a daughter. My wife is called Lisa and she's originally from Indonesia, but she's lived here in London for fifteen years now. She's a graphic designer and she runs her own design company. Our daughter is called Maia, and she's two and a half now - and lovely! We're trying to bring her up bilingually, so we speak English AND Indonesian to her. Here's a picture of the two of them this summer in Austria.

and here we are in New York earlier this year.

As well as teaching, I do a lot of teacher training and I also write coursebooks for students learning English. I've co-authored two series of General English books, called INNOVATIONS and OUTCOMES. They look like this:

In my free time, I love watching football - my team is Arsenal, who're having a bit of a hard time at the moment.

I also love watching movies, listening to music, cooking, reading and travelling. I actually worked out recently that I've been to 42 different countries so far in my 42 years!

My mum and dad are divorced, and they're both retired now. My dad is 81 and lives in the south of England, near Brighton, while my mum is much younger - only 64 - and she lives in Durham, in the north-east. My mum used to be a teacher, so maybe teaching is in the blood. I also have a younger brother, Barnaby, who works with computers. he lives in Edinburgh and is married to a Scottish woman.

Well, that's enough to begin with, I think.
If you have anything you'd like to know, please just ask me.

Also, for homework, it'd be great if you could post a bit about yourself and your family - who you are, where you're from, what you do, what you like doing in your free time and so on. Maybe you could even upload some pictures?
